ACADEMICS
Overview
It is our mission to commit to every student's academic achievement, personal development, and social responsibility, and we live that mission on a daily basis. The primary focus of a school is academic achievement. At Oak Ridge we work to meet the needs of all students through a workshop style approach. In workshop style instruction the teacher serves as a facilitator of instruction, not the focal point. Workshop style instruction usually consists of a mini-lesson (5-15 minutes) where a skill is taught. This skill is then applied either through group or independent practice. Students then collaborate to share how they applied the skill with each other, and finally, the class as a whole meets for a period of reflection. Workshop style instruction allows students to work at their appropriate level. They can apply the skill being taught as it relates to them. Teachers can provide support and instruction at the student's level, whether they are exceeding expectations or struggling to grasp a particular subject. Workshop style instruction can be translated to any subject area and provides flexibility for all students. Our teachers are well-versed and trained in this form of instruction but they realize there is always room for growth. They understand what it means to be a lifelong learner and lead by example, constantly improving through professional development and additional trainings.
