Science

The science curriculum at Oak Ridge provides the framework for students to develop scientific literacy by using, constructing, reflecting on

scientific knowledge, and coming to informed conclusions. Students will learn concepts and theories of the three main science areas: earth, life, and physical. Oak Ridge uses a hands on approach to science. Students are given access to science kits where they can explore, investigate, and discover in a collaborative environment. The kits, combined with an increased commitment to reading in the content area, provide a well-rounded science curriculum.

The science kits for each grade level are as follows:

Kindergarten: Animals; and Balls and Ramps

First Grade: Solids and Liquids; Air and Weather; and Insects

Second Grade: Changes; New Plants; and Pebbles, Sand, and Silt

Third Grade: Structures of Life; Force and Motion; and Rocks and Minerals

Fourth Grade: Sun, Earth, and Moon; Magnets and Electricity; and Ecosystems

Fifth Grade: Earth, Moon, and Sun; Motion and Design; and Human Body Systems.

Recently, there has been movement by many educators and professionals in the scientific community to revise the science curriculum nation-wide. This new curriculum is referred to as the Next Generation Science Standards. The focus places more emphasis on the interrelation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. To learn more about the NGSS click here: Although NGSS has not been formaly adopted by Royal Oak Schools, we will continue to stay informed and updated on changes at the state level.
