English Language Arts at Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge applies the common core standards in ELA through the use of the Oakland County MAISA units. The MAISA ELA curriculum materials are designed to support districts as they work to implement the Common Core State Standards for ELA. They are unit designs for both reading and writing that complement each other. They include lessons as well as resource materials. To learn more about the MAISA units please click here.

Oak Ridge uses a workshop style approach to ELA. Most of our lessons consist of a mini lesson, small group work, independent reading or writing time and a review or check for understanding of the mini lesson. Using the MAISA units of study we incorporate this workshop style approach to ensure we can meet the needs of all students at their appropriate level. Please click on the highlighted links to learn more about instruction in reading and writing.

Oak Ridge uses the program Words Their Way for word study. This program focuses more on learning the rules to spelling words, as opposed to memorizing the words themselves. To learn more about Words Their Way, click here.
